Job Description: Sr Tax Manager – Indirect Tax – Exemption Documentation Processes and Sales/Use Tax Research

Current Need
We have a current need for a Sr. Tax Manager – Indirect Taxes. The responsibilities include: managing Indirect Transaction Tax Exemption Documentation team with exemption documentation and process activities ensuring compliance with all U.S. State and Local taxing jurisdiction rules, regulations, collection and retention requirements for all McKesson businesses; reviewing, evaluating, and driving improvements within related processes, including tax credits, and leading implementation/upgrade of tracking software programs; engaging with assigned business unit personnel to provide sales/use tax exemption documentation consulting, understand business changes to provide business unit with the sales/use tax exemption documentation implications and incorporate any changes into documentation compliance activities, where applicable. Also responsible for ensuring timely “refreshes” of exemption documentation, assisting with implementing acquisition exemption documentation compliance procedures, authoring and maintaining SOPs for sales/use tax exemption documentation team, assisting on SUT audits, as needed, and assisting Director – Indirect Tax with U.S. State and Local taxability research, including analyzing tax regulations and providing recommendations to support tax planning and compliance efforts; monitor legislative and regulatory changes as they pertain to U.S. Indirect Tax; assist in the review of sales tax returns and payments process; assisting Indirect Tax Leadership with project work, as assigned. Responsible for the managing, mentoring, and development of 2 – 5 SUT exemption documentation team members.
Position Description
- Manages activities of functional area through first level managers and specialist individual contributors. Assists with the development of group, function, department goals, performance standards / metrics. Accountable for customer satisfaction, programs, products, employees for assigned area of responsibility.
- Partners with Tax Leadership on identifying process improvement initiatives. Takes the lead in implementing agreed on initiatives. Examples of such initiatives include projects to streamline processes for the company’s exemption documentation collection and issuance and refreshing the documentation on established or required basis. Also interfaces with other members of the Tax Team concerning improvement initiatives.
- Liaison with internal cross-functional teams to develop integrated exemption documentation compliance to facilitate overall sales and use tax compliance and audit defense processes.
- Works with indirect tax leadership and assigned business leaders concerning collection of customer exemption documentation and issuance of vendor exemption documentation, review and approval of customer tax credits, and the related documentation retention.
- Researching exemption documentation requirements as needed, special projects, new acquisitions, and coordinating with Tax Leadership.
- Maintains current and accurate exemption documentation SOPs.
- Responsible for meeting all required deadlines. Maintains current knowledge of tax laws affecting the company. Assists in tax audits and other duties as determined relating to the exemption documentation function.
- Partner with Indirect Tax audit team concerning exemption documentation supporting audit defense and incorporating identified and agreed upon improvements within the exemption documentation processes, including updating customer account tax class.
- Identify process improvements for the exemption documentation team, and work with colleagues to achieve consensus and implement quantitative and qualitative material improvements.
- Conduct in-depth research of State and Local tax regulations and policies, assist in taxability matrices updates, including Vertex Q and O series, Taxware, etc., and collaborate with broader Indirect Tax Team to implement changes and updates.
- Review tax clauses in customer and supplier contracts and provide recommendations to internal business teams.
- Respond to taxability questions from internal and external customers.
- Other projects as identified by Tax Leadership.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- 8+ years accounting experience
- 8+ years combined sales tax return prep, sales tax research, and sales tax audit experience, with at least 2 years’ experience in the healthcare industry
- 5+ years sales tax documentation experience
- 8+years management experience
Critical Skills
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting
- Demonstrated knowledge of sales and use tax from a nationwide level, including home rule jurisdictions
- Demonstrated competence with JD Edwards and SAP ERPs and working knowledge of multiple additional ERPs including PeopleSoft, etc.
- Demonstrated competence with tax research software and tools (e.g. CCH, RIA Checkpoint, Bloomberg, TTR)
- Demonstrated competence in Accounting, including JEs, P&L, B/S, and A/R impacts
- Demonstrated competence of MS Excel at an intermediate level
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated competence in research, analysis, and application of law
- Demonstrated competence leading software implementation projects and other process improvement projects
Additional Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrated competence in compliance activities, including data retrieval, analysis, reconciliation, and reporting
- Demonstrated competence and success in meeting internal and external required sales / use tax return deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team
- Demonstrated ability to translate and communicate complex or difficult tax concepts to others in a plain and understandable manner. Strong customer service orientation and project management skills. High level of ethics, integrity, discretion and confidentiality.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting
Master’s degree preferred
CPA, CMI preferred
